The 5 most popular Louis Vuitton collaborations ever
Since the beginning of the 21st century, Louis Vuitton has started to take steps towards collaborating with other brands and artists. The French luxury brand is known for its love of fashion, art and architecture and decided to combine two of these passions. Combining fashion with art resulted in the most fantastic collections. Louis Vuitton was the very first luxury brand to make the step to collaborate with other brands and artists. Thanks to this step taken by Louis Vuitton, other luxury brands later saw the success of the partnership and followed suit. Nowadays, collaborations have become almost the norm in the fashion world, and we totally love it!
In today's blog, we want to highlight the top 5 most popular Louis Vuitton collaborations. Next to these collabs, there are way more collaborations Louis Vuitton did over the years. And, safe to say, many more to come in the future. At the moment, these are the five most popular collaborations! Is your favorite included?
5. Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton
When Marc Jacobs was creative director of Louis Vuitton in 2012, he decided to embark on a bold yet playful collaboration with, and pay tribute to, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, also known as the queen of polka dots. Yayoi Kusama was then 82 years old. Better known as the stern-faced woman in the neon red wig and kimono. In Japan, she is known for her high-quality and inexpensive products. She has been considered one of the most important and influential working artists. Kusama is notorious for her obsessive dot-covered artworks, ranging from trippy mirror rooms to colorful outdoor sculptures to naked people.
The collection debuted in July 2012 under the name 'Infinitely Kusama'. The capsule collection consisted of bags, ready-to-wear clothing, accessories, shoes and jewelry full of dots, translating her message of obsession and seriality. Louis Vuitton stores around the world were totally transformed for the launch of this collection.
Marc Jacobs explained about the collection: “In the past, artists with whom I have chosen to collaborate, were quite spontaneous decisions. But they all meant something to me, personally they created a world that I relate to and love to work with. What I like and appreciate, so when we came into contact with Yayoi Kusama, I immediately embraced it, just like my team. It's very dynamic, very animated and, like Kusama, just represents this kind of obsession with dots and this round shape without an end. It gives a feeling of infinity and it gives a certain positive energy. It can be described as timeless, special and artistic.''
Items from the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collection are very hard to get these days and will be limited forever!
4. Jeff Koons x Louis Vuitton
Another very well-known and successful collaboration is the one with artist Jeff Koons, launched in April 2017. Jeff Koons is an artist who always dares to think out of the box. The Louis Vuitton x Jeff Koons collection is also called The Master Line. The collection is about breathing new life into old art.
It is a truly distinctive collection, Louis Vuitton's iconic items feature works of art by well-known artists such as DaVinci, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Poussin and Turner. The collection is inspired by Koons' Gazing Ball series of large-scale, hand-painted reproductions of the old masters, and has been applied to a range of Louis Vuitton accessories. The artworks include Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Titian's Mars, Venus and Cupid, Fragonard's Girl with a Dog, Van Gogh's Wheat Fields and Cypresses, and Rubens's Tiger Hunt.
The collection was created because Louis Vuitton really wanted to convey his passion and love for art. Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons hoped that with this collaboration they could show that art is absolutely beautiful and not boring at all.
For this collection, Jeff Koons also transformed the Iconic Louis Vuitton logo into a logo with his own initials. He also added a leather label of the famous Jeff Koons rabbit to each bag. That rabbit is a trademark of Jeff Koons' art and has become one of the most iconic works of 20th century art. This is a first for the brand, which has not had their iconic symbol reformed in 16 years of collaboration. Inside the bags you will find the biography and a portrait of Koons. The accessories are decorated with the name of the original artist whose work is represented, in homage to the old masters.
Prices of the bags and accessories started from € 500,- and go up to € 3000,-. Today they are no longer available at these prices on the resale market, as the value of these items is much higher.
3. Supreme x Louis Vuitton
The most groundbreaking collaboration on this list is probably the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and the American streetwear brand Supreme in 2017. The Louis Vuitton x Supreme team was truly hyped and coveted among modern fashion enthusiasts. Kim Jones (Louis Vuitton's menswear designer) and James Jebbia (the founder of Supreme) showed the collection at Fashion Week January 2017.
The collection includes the Supremes box logo in bold red and white on Louis Vuitton's items. Louis Vuitton's famous Monogram print also came out in the Supreme colors. The bags in this collection were available in three different materials: a camouflage fabric red Epi leather and a black Epi leather.
The items were only available in a few The Louis Vuitton stores in areas where both brands were popular at the time.
The prices of the items from these collections are currently very high, the circulation is very limited and therefore very popular. A small pocket square costs more than € 3,000,-, the well-known sweater from this collection will cost you around € 12,000,- and the Louis Vuitton X Supreme Keepall is sold for a price of around € 20,000,-. It makes you greedy, but don't forget: dreaming is always allowed!
2. Stephen Sprouse x Louis Vuitton
The first artist to approach Louis Vuitton's creative artist Marc Jacobs was Stephen Sprouse. In 2001, Louis Vuitton and Sprouse entered into a partnership that is now known as one of the brand's most beloved collaborations.
The Louis Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse collection items had an insanely cool redesigned Monogram graffiti print that read Louis Vuitton Paris. Louis Vuitton fans immediately fell in love with the monogrammed graffiti created by Marc Jacobs and Stephen Sprouse.
Sadly, Stephen Sprouse died of cancer in 2004. In 2009, Marc Jacobs decided to create a collection that would pay tribute to Sprouse. The graffiti line was reintroduced in 2009. This collection included a new design with beautifully painted roses, based on a sketch of a rose that Stephen Sprouse drew himself during the first collaboration.
The Roses collection features some of the rarest and most sought-after Louis Vuitton bags of our time, and unlike the brand's Multicolore Monogram bags, which were an equally coveted collaboration with Takashi Murakami, the Roses collection never seemed dated or overplayed. The beautiful, coveted bags are still demanding sales well above market value, more than 10 years after the collection was released, confirming this partnership as one of the brand's best.
1. Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton
It may be no surprise this collaboration is mentioned as the most popular of all times. Who doesn't know this highly sought-after collar, after all?!
Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist with whom Louis Vuitton first collaborated in 2003. This collaboration gave rise to the well-known and very popular multi-colored monogram print. The brightly colored monogram print came on a solid black or white coated canvas. Stars like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson were big fans in the early 2000s. It was no surprise that the bags from this collaboration are labeled 'it-bags'. They still are, now that the Monogram Multicolore line has ended for good since 2015, the vintage bags are more in demand than ever.
In 2020, Kylie Jenner surprised her two-year-old daughter Stormi with the Louis Vuitton Speedy Mini Multicolore. This bag has enough space for all of her coloring pencils and her baby cosmetics. Unfortunately, her iPhone does not fit. But she definitely steals the show with this Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami bag. And of course, Kylie Jenner has made this bag even more popular.
The Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami Monogram Multicolore collaboration is the Louis Vuitton collaboration we love most. We are always delighted when we receive items from this collection.
After the groundbreaking Monogram Multicolore collection, Louis Vuitton collaborated a few more times with Takashi Murakami. They launched the 'Cherry Blossom' collection in 2002, the 'Monogramcouflage' collection in 2008, the 'Rugs' collection in 2009, the 'Character bag' collection and other collaborations.
Unfortunately, Louis Vuitton announced in 2015 that the company will end its 13-year relationship with Takashi Murakami. The collaborations with Takashi Murakami had been their longest and most typical. Together they have brought art and fashion together in a special way.
