As useful as they may be, toiletry bags have always been unashamedly decadent in design. This was taken to a whole new level in the 1920s and 1930s, when women's burgeoning independence (it was now socially recognized for young ladies to smoke and apply makeup in public) assuming toiletry bags made new demands.

The toiletry bag is the essence of elegance. An embellished suitcase that fulfills many different roles, the toiletry bag is both a clutch and a compact suitcase that allows ultimate yet discreet storage for one's accessories. Since the 1920s and 1930s, the greatest jewelry houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Tiffany, Cartier, Chaumet, Schlumberger, Lacloche, Boivin, Mauboussin and Buccellatti have all had styles of these precious cases that reflect trends from Art Deco, to Art Nouveau, Cubism to Bauhaus.

 Charles Arpels (co-founder of Van Cleef & Arpels) came up with the idea after seeing his girlfriend, the American name Florence Gould, her lipstick, cigarette lighter, powder and some banknotes in a Lucky Strike tin. This inspired him to create a thin makeup bag so that a lady can pack all her essentials into one stylish, on-the-go package.
