History

International Handbag Day was first celebrated in 2013. It was founded by Purse Blog, a handbag industry whose blog focuses on fashion and handbags. Handbag Day recognizes the importance of handbags in everyday life and fashion. The day's festivities recognize that handbags are an important part of every woman’s wardrobe.

Purses are the primary accessory for storing non-monetary items such as personal items. A purse is a term that originally referred to a small bag used to store coins. It's still used today to refer to a small coin pocket in British English. Nowadays, men have joined the love for handbags and they wear it as often as women.

Handbag is a term that appeared in the early 1900s. It was originally most often used to refer to men's hand luggage. During this period, women's bags became larger and more sophisticated, and the word was attached to accessories. The Industrial Revolution in Britain brought about the use of modern wallets, clutches, pouches, or handbags. The oldest known bag is over 5,000 years old. Talk about vintage, huh?
